Click to read the Introduction to WILDFLOWER

This is my current writing and photographic project. I was born in Middlesbrough at the mouth of the River Tees and this river, from its estuary, hemmed in by heavy industry, to its upper reaches, running wild and free in the high Dales, was where I first began to appreciate the natural world. Having subsequently travelled over much of the world and seen some of its greatest wildlife spectacles in a 30 year career as a wildlife film-maker, I felt it was time to return to the river where my love of nature was born. I will travel the length of the river, along the Teesdale Way long-distance footpath - from the estuary to its source in the Pennines, exploring the natural world of the river, and showing how human history along the river is closely intertwined with natural history. I am also photographing the river and its animals and plants, so the book will be lavishly illustrated. In addition, the book will be part autobiography, as different places, events or animals and plants along the river remind me either of my early days exploring the Tees or of the rich diversity of wildlife and places I’ve seen around the world. I hope to complete both the writing and photography by early 2019.
